The RagaMuffin breed has been bred in Europe since 2002.

Origin and characteristics

The British Shorthair is an ancient breed believed to have been brought to Britain by the Romans. Especially due to the world wars, the breed was on the verge of extinction and it was allowed to cross other cats, especially Persians, into the breed in order to preserve the breed and to gain more variability in colors. Since the Persian gene for long hair is recessive in and of itself, the babies obtained in this way are mostly short-haired, but every now and then a cuckoo kitten is in the litter: a Highlander Shorthair is born.

Character and appearance

Highlander Longhair, like the British Shorthair, are muscular and well built. They have a rather short tail, stocky legs and a broad chest. The ears and eyes are also round, so that the overall picture is balanced. The fur of the Highlander Longhair is fluffy and is ideal for cuddling. The eyes can be blue or green, but mostly orange or copper. There are more than 50 recognized color variations in the British Shorthair that also apply to the Highlander Longhair. The cats are considered to be rather calm and not as playful and lively as some oriental cats, so they can be kept well in the family and at home.

The Turkish Angora is one of the oldest and most beautiful cat breeds in the world and the national cat of Turkey: "Angora" means "Ankara". It is considered the archetype of all long-haired cats known today and arose as a breed without human intervention.

Blue eyes and silky fur

Turkish Angora cats appeared as a gift from Turkish sultans in Europe in the 16th century and were soon considered a special status symbol at the courts. The grace and beauty of the cats, the blue eyes and the silky long fur gave the cats and thus their owners a high rank. In addition, the friendly and affectionate nature of these cats was previously unknown in Europe; the local cats were not very friendly to people. The Turkish Angora was considered a real luxury animal and was given away by kings to deserving vassals.

Increasing popularity of the Turkish Angora

After the Turkish Angora almost became extinct, it has been breeding again since the 1960s. The beautiful animals are enjoying increasing popularity.

Perfect house cat

The Turkish Angora is considered to be the perfect house and apartment cat: The animals are robust and yet elegant, have a pronounced play instinct, which also makes them ideal playmates for children, and are also extremely satisfied with living in the apartment. They get along well with dogs and other cats. Since they have no undercoat, Turkish Angora appear narrow and elegant compared to other long-haired cats.

The Havana is a variety of the oriental shorthair cats. The brown fur, reminiscent of the color of Cuban cigarettes, is characteristic of the animals. Animals very similar to Havana had already been presented at exhibitions in the 19th century. The modern Havana breed was founded by a male born in Great Britain in 1952 called “Elmtower Bronze Idol”. His descendants were presented to a wide audience under the name “Chestnutbrown Foreigns”. The breed, officially recognized in Great Britain since 1958, has been known as Havana since 1970. The cats are literally built and move elegantly and gracefully. The characteristics of the animals are a wedge-shaped head, a long nose, very large ears and ideally green eyes. The very short fur is close, shiny and reminiscent of the fur of a mink.

Havana character

The Havana is a cat with a strong character, which is only recommended for experienced cat owners. The temperament of the animals is calmer than that of the related Siamese cats. The animals are very self-confident and highly intelligent, but also proud and stubborn. They observe their environment attentively and want to participate in everything. A Havana needs a lot of attention and activity and can be taught tricks.

The Don Sphynx (Sphynx vom Don), also known as the Don Hairless, is a very young breed of Russian hairless cats. The Don Sphynx only associate the better-known Canadian breed Sphynx with its similar appearance and name. Because of their non-existent or hardly any fur, the naked cats are suitable for allergy sufferers. They do not require any special care, but a lot of attention.

Noticeably long toes

The Don Sphynx breed was recognized by the WCF in 1997. The ancestral mother was a hairless cat that was found in 1987 in the Russian city of Rostov on the Don River. Characteristic are the large ears, almond-shaped eyes and noticeably long toes. The breed is often criticized for its poorly growing whiskers. With the Don Sphynx, a distinction is made between hairless, light downy hair (velor) and thicker hair (brush).

Keeping and care

Don Sphynx cats tolerate both sun and cold very well. But they should be protected from strong drafts. Due to the lack of fur, however, the hairless cats have an increased energy requirement. So they need a little more food than most other breeds. Due to the increased metabolism, the Don Sphynx are also less prone to infections. The skin should be cleaned daily with a soft cloth. To remove the fatty film from the skin, cats should be bathed occasionally. A bath is particularly important if you sweat heavily, otherwise the skin may become discolored. However, bathing too often can also cause the skin to produce more oil.

Character of the Don Sphynx

Don Sphynx are very people-centered and seek a lot of closeness to their owner. These cats are not good at staying alone. They are intelligent, curious and therefore very playful. Above all, however, the Russian hairless cats are described as particularly friendly, gentle and good-natured.
